Services offered
The Family Responsibility Office (FRO) is a statutory program mandated under the Family Responsibility and Support Arrears Enforcement Act, 1996. FRO helps families in Ontario get the support payments they are entitled to by enforcing support orders. We work to send payments from the person who pays the support to the person who receives it.

A support order is a document outlining the payment of child or spousal support and can come in the form of:

  • a court order made by an Ontario court,
  • a domestic contract that is filed with an Ontario court,
  • a Notice of Child Support Calculation or Recalculation made by Ontario’s online child support service,
  • a court order made under the Divorce Act in another Canadian jurisdiction, or
  • a court order, administrative order or written agreement made and enforceable in a reciprocating jurisdiction that is registered for enforcement in an Ontario court.

Every court order for child and spousal support made in the province of Ontario is automatically filed with FRO for enforcement. Parties have the option of withdrawing their order or agreement from the program. The Director of FRO has the exclusive jurisdiction to enforce support orders filed with the program.

Costs
There is no charge to file a support order for enforcement the first time. Where an order is withdrawn from FRO enforcement by the parties to the order and later re-filed, there is a re-filing fee of $50 payable by each party.

The Director of FRO has the authority to charge fees in some circumstances, as set out in Ontario Regulation 160 / 00. For example, fees may be charged for enforcement actions such as drivers licence suspensions. This regulation may be viewed electronically at:
