TAX COURT JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, April 11, 2014 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable John R. Owen, a lawyer with Bennett Jones in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Tax Court of Canada to replace Mr. Justice F. M. Angers, who resigned as of October 31, 2013.

Mr. Justice Owen completed a Bachelor of Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo in 1981 and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Toronto in 1984. He also completed a Master of Laws (Taxation Law) at York University, Osgoode Hall Law School in 1997. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1986 and to the Bar of British Columbia in 1992.

Mr. Justice Owen practised with Blaney McMurty from 1986 to 1990 and with Thorsteinssons from 1990 to 2004. From 2004, he practised with Bennett Jones, except for a brief period with Baker MacKenzie in 2012. He was Co-Chair of the Bennett Jones Tax and Estates Group from 2010 to 2011. His practice focus was Canadian income tax law, and his expertise in that area has been recognized by several publications, including Best Lawyers in Canada, the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, and The World's Leading Lawyers.

Mr. Justice Owen was a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, and the International Fiscal Association. He has published numerous articles and been a frequent conference speaker on issues relating to taxation law.

This appointment is effective immediately.
