Figure 9: Agreement with statements about youth sentencing principles. This is a horizontal stacked bar chart that illustrates agreement with statements about youth sentencing principles.  The Y-axis is divided into 7 categories. The Y-axis lists the following categories from top to bottom:

  • youth offenders should be held less accountable than adults because of their greater dependency and reduced maturity;
  • judges should provide culturally appropriate sentencing for Aboriginal youth by first considering a sentence that does not involve jail;
  • putting youth in jail is an effective method of correcting behaviour;
  • the youth’s circumstances should be taken into consideration at sentencing;
  • jail should only be used for violent youth and repeat offenders;
  • protecting society from crime should be the focus of the youth justice system;
  • rehabilitation is an important goal of the youth justice system.

Among respondents, agreement was distributed as follows:

  • youth offenders should be held less accountable than adults because of their greater dependency and reduced maturity – strongly agree 5%, agree 27%, disagree 42% and strongly disagree 26%;
  • judges should provide culturally appropriate sentencing for Aboriginal youth by first considering a sentence that does not involve jail – strongly agree 9%, agree 29%, disagree 39% and strongly disagree 23%;
  • putting youth in jail is an effective method of correcting behaviour – strongly agree 8%, agree 40%, disagree 40% and strongly disagree 12%;
  • the youth’s circumstances should be taken into consideration at sentencing – strongly agree 16%, agree 56%, disagree 22% and strongly disagree 7%;
  • jail should only be used for violent youth and repeat offenders – strongly agree 23%, agree 48%, disagree 22% and strongly disagree 7%;
  • protecting society from crime should be the focus of the youth justice system – strongly agree 28%, agree 54%, disagree 15% and strongly disagree 3%;
  • rehabilitation is an important goal of the youth justice system – strongly agree 42%, agree 51%, disagree 5% and strongly disagree 2%.
