Chart 2: Legal Aid Applications Received and Approved and Legal Aid Expenditures in Current and 1987 Dollars 1986-87 to 1999-00
Chart 2 is a line chart which illustrates the shift in the number of legal aid applications received and approved and fluctuations in the total amount spent on legal aid across Canada from 1986-87 to 1999-00.
This line chart has 4 separate lines which represent: Applications, Approved, Expenditure 1987 $ and Expenditure $.
The X axis is divided by 14 categories, from left to right: 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-00, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-00.
The Y axis indicates the number of legal aid applications received and approved and expenditures from 0 to 1,400,000 in increments of 200,000.
In terms of Applications, the line is in a bell curved shape between 800,000 in both 1986-87 and 1999-00 and reaches its high in 1992-93 at approximately 1,200,000 applications.
In terms of Approved applications, the line also is in a bell curved shape at 500,000 approved applications in 1986-87, reaches a peak in 1992-93 at approximately 800,000 approved applications and decreases to approximately 500,000 in 1996-97 to 1999-00.
In terms of Expenditure 1987 $, the line bell shaped with its extremities between 200,000 and 400,000 1987 dollars and reached its peak in 1992-93 to 1995-96 at approximately 450,000 1987 dollars.
In terms of Expenditure $, the line is once again in a bell shape, however the left outlier is slightly lower between approximately 200,000 and 400,000 dollars in 1986 to 1991 compared to the right outlier which is between 400,000 and 500,000 dollars in 1996 to 2000. The highest expenditure in dollars was attained in 1994-95 at just above 600,000 dollars.
