Purpose: The Society promotes research, upgrades criteria for research and underlines the status of forensic science in Canada. The Society has established two committees: the Alcohol Test Committee and the Drugs and Driving Committee. The Alcohol Test Committee acts as an advisory body to the Department of Justice on matters related to alcohol and the law. It evaluates, tests and reports to the Minister on the scientific acceptability of breath analysis equipment used to determine the blood alcohol content of a person suspected of impaired driving. The Drugs and Driving Committee conducts and monitors research in a number of areas including the driving of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Advice from this Committee assists in responding to outstanding policy issues related to drugs and driving. The Society provides a service to the Department for the Minister who will issue an order adding a particular testing device to the approved list, under s. 254 of the Criminal Code. The activities of the Society fit the goals and objectives and priorities of the Fund in promoting and developing Canadian law and in justice system design.
