Prince George Urban Aboriginal Justice Society uses an Aboriginal Circle model where the youth, guardian, victim and various representatives from the community work with the youth to recognize the following:
how ones actions affected the community both directly and indirectly;
how one may amend or correct the situation;
actions one can take to learn from the mistake and prevent this from occurring again.
Recommendations made by the Circle become the Diversion agreement and may include apologies to the victim, restitution, community service hours, research, cultural education and referrals to specific services located within the community. The youth is monitored until the terms of the agreement are completed. It is not mandatory for victims to attend the Circle, but they are encouraged to participate by giving statements that can be shared in the Circle if they choose not to attend.
