Purpose: The Nisga'a Lisims Government has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Yuuhlamk'askw Alternative Justice Program (YAJP). The program delivers diversion measures for youth and adult residents of New Aiyanish, Gitwinksihlkw, Lakatzap and Gingolx. The objectives of the YAJP are to provide a process that allows individuals involved with the law to be dealt with by using restorative/alternative justice principles outside the traditional court system; to lessen the impact of crime and trauma on victims and their families and to assist in their recovery; to assist in the monitoring of adult offenders under the supervision of the Corrections Branch. This may include, but not be limited to: pre-trial release, (bail) and community supervision which include, diversion, electronic monitoring, probation and conditional release such as temporary absences and parole; and to strengthen the capacity of communities to respond effectively to crime.
