Purpose: The Champagne and Aishikik First Nations have entered into an agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Haines Junction Community Justice Committee (HJCJC). Its overall goal is to offer a community-based justice process using diversion, circle sentencing, mediation and conferencing to deal with offenders, with particular attention to First Nations members. The aim of the program is to prevent crime and encourage the community to play an active role in crime prevention. The program uses sentencing circles, healing circles and talking circles to accomplish these goals, and has protocol agreements in place with the RCMP.
