Purpose: This research proposal involves the evaluation of an integrated domestic violence court pilot project that will be established by the Ontario Court of Justice in early 2011. The pilot will be dedicated to the "one family - one judge" concept and will allow a single judge to hear the criminal and family law cases which relate to one family where the underlying issue is domestic violence. The proposed study highlights a joint collaboration between university-based researchers, justice system professionals and the community partners involved in the first integrated domestic violence court in Canada. The objective of this study is to determine whether an integrated approach to handling domestic family violence cases results in: (a) better quality of judicial decision-making; (b) an optimal use of community resources by making the offender more accountable; and (c) providing the necessary community support services to the family from a holistic approach.
