Purpose: Maskwacis Justice Society has entered into a contribution agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to implement and manage the Poneyyihtamowin Circle Program. The objective of the Poneyyihtamowin Circle Program is to provide education and delivery of a community-based restorative justice program that is culturally relevant and reflective of the community's needs. The program will deliver training and awareness to Elders and community members to establish restorative justice model and skills which will combine traditional "CREE" culture with the mainstream justice system; develop and maintain training material and, promote and support community involvement in safe community justice models. Partnerships are established with the justice community including the RCMP, Crown Prosecutor and the Province of Alberta. Poneyyihtamowin Circle Program will result in increased knowledge and participation in safe justice community models that incorporate CREE culture and teachings and, will focus on community Elders, families and youth at risk. The Maskwacis Justice Society will provide restorative justice services to the communities of the four Hobbema Nations: Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, Montana First Nation and Samson Cree Nation.
