Purpose: The Yorkton Tribal Council has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Yorkton Tribal Council Community Justice Program. The objectives of the Program are to coordinate the development and implementation of community justice structures, plans and services for the six member First Nations of the Tribal Council (Cote, Kahkewistahaw, Keeseekoose, Key, Ocean Man and Sakimay First Nations) as well as the cities of Yorkton and Melville and the towns of Kamsack, Pelly, Canora, Broadview and surrounding areas. The Justice Unit supports the development of Community Justice Committees, as well as a First Nations Aboriginal Justice Network consisting of six First Nation Representatives and a Yorkton urban representative. The program focuses on holistic community development and restoration and alternative measures programming for youth and adults. In addition, work will continue on crime prevention, healing and sentencing circles, and community based victims and correctional services. A formal working relationship has been established between Yorkton Tribal Council and all other parties involved in the diversion of adults and youth in accordance with the diversion policies of Saskatchewan by way of a formal protocol agreement. The protocol agreement reflects commitment among the parties to establish roles and responsibilities and provide consistency, clarity and efficiency in the coordination and delivery of Alternative Measures/Extra-judicial Sanctions for the communities served. The signatories of the protocol include the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, the Ministry of Environment, the RCMP and Crown Council.
