Purpose: The Beardy's & Okemasis Band #96 & #97 has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to deliver the Beardy's & Okemasis First Nation Community Justice Program. The vision of the Program is to design and implement innovative and sustainable processes to prevent crime and victimization in the community. The primary objectives of the Program are to facilitate diversion and mediation programming as an alternative to the mainstream justice system for adults and youth. A Traditional Justice Committee and Elders provide guidance and support to the Program which utilizes victim offender mediation, family group conferencing, sentencing and releasing circles. The Program works to educate and raise public awareness on restorative justice and reintegrating community members being released from custody back into the community. Elders assist the program by teaching values and traditions that provide social and culturally appropriate opportunities for cultural expression and programming that build pro-social skills among youth at risk. This includes youth monitoring, peer support projects, gang prevention and awareness programming. The Program works closely with justice partners including the RCMP, Police Management Board, Corrections Services Canada, and Corrections and Public Safety to develop integrated community justice approaches that reflect the needs of the community.
