The Cree Regional Authority (CRA) has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Cree Regional Authority Justice Committees Program and provide support within the nine Cree communities (Whapmagoostui, Chisasibi, Wemindji, Eastmain, Waskaganish, Nemiscau, Waswanipi, Oujé-Bougamou and Mistissini) for the training, development and operation of local justice committees. The objective for the CRA is to establish Cree Justice Committees in communities without such committees. The funding is also intended to support existing Cree Justice Committees.
The CRA will undertake various training activities to develop core competencies to meet the differing justice-related needs of the respective justice committees. A focus will also be placed on advancing the work of existing justice committees so that they can begin to handle justice-related interventions and the diversion of youth and adults from the mainstream justice system.
The Program will work with the following partners in order to fulfill its objectives: Corrections and social services, local police, local crown, courts and the CRA.
The expected results of this Program are the establishment and training of Cree Justice Committees in all of the Quebec Cree communities to enable them to handle justice-related referrals for youth and adults diversions from the mainstream justice system.
