Purpose: The MLTC Program Services Inc. has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Meadow Lake Tribal Council Community Justice Program. The Program coordinates the development of community justice structures, plans and services for the nine member First Nations of the Tribal Council (Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Buffalo River Dene Nation, Canoe Lake Cree Nation, Clearwater River Dene Nation, English River First Nation, Flying Dust First Nation, Island Lake First Nation, Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation and Waterhen Lake First Nation). Activities vary from community to community and include crime prevention; mediation and dispute resolution; healing, talking and sentencing circles; alternative measures programs for adults and youth; victim services; and community-based correctional services that focus on offender rehabilitation and reintegration, and victim/offender healing. A formal working relationship has been established between Meadow Lake Tribal Council and partners involved in the diversion of adults and youth in accordance with the diversion policies of Saskatchewan via a formal protocol agreement. The protocol agreement reflects commitment among the parties to establish roles and responsibilities and provide consistency, clarity and efficiency in the coordination and delivery of alternative measures/extra-judicial sanctions for the communities served. The signatories of the protocol include the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, the Ministry of Environment, the RCMP and Crown Council.
