The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Naskapi Justice Healing Committee Program.
The objectives of the Program are to deal with conflict, and crime using approaches that emphasize healing for individuals, families and the community. The Program responds to the needs of Naskapi offenders, victims and families and reinforces the role of the community in the administration of justice.
The Program aims to raise awareness within the community and its justice committee on various topics such as communication, conflict resolution, peacemaking and traditional justice; establish collaborative procedures with police, court workers and the Crown; offer support in criminal or conflict situations; and encourage youth involvement in the community in a constructive manner.
The Program serves youth and adults of Kawawachikamach, a community situated near the mining town of Schefferville, 500 km north of Sept-Iles.
